FMI has another great new talent joining the books this week. Irene Dickson introduces herself with some fabulous samples of her work. "I am so excited to be joining Frances’ group of wonderful illustrators, and doing what I have always wanted to do!"
As a graphic designer with a long held hankering to illustrate children’s books, I decided to take the plunge and this year gained my MA in Children’s Book Illustration from Cambridge School of Art. Along the way I won The Macmillan prize (and was highly commended another year) and most recently was shortlisted in the AOI Awards 2014 new talent section with my book ‘Izzi and the Zoo next door’ about a very helpful little girl who gets sidetracked a bit too often!
I like to create images based on observational drawing, using a fusion of traditional and digital techniques, with a flavour of printmaking and a dash of nostalgia from my own childhood influences thrown in.
Frances and I are currently finalising a contract with the wonderful Nosy Crow to publish my first picture book BLOCKS' about the power struggles toddlers face all in a day’s play!
I am working on other projects too now which I hope to share in the future. I am thrilled to be embarking on my new career in such esteemed company and look forward to my new life as a children’s book illustrator!
