Frances rang me up one day to ask, “How do you feel about drawing meerkats?” I answered, “Well, I’d definitely like to give it a go!” Especially as we are members of a small local zoo in East Sussex, that is particularly known for its meerkat family, and a its meerkat viewing dome, where my girls love to pop their heads through, to become part of the meerkat surroundings!
So with sketch book in hand and many photos of previous visits to the zoo, I got working, and working, in fact I got quite carried away, which I loved, but the only problem is, is that when I get an idea in my head, I just can’t switch it off, even at 3am in the morning at times, AHH!
Apparently Frances had been contacted by a London based publishing company requesting for a meerkat character, to accompany a story about a young meerkat who suddenly has to adjust to having everyone’s attention turned to his new baby sibling.
Currently I am on tender hooks awaiting news as to whether my work has been accepted for the story, I have heard that they are really keen on my artwork, and very much like my character development of this little meerkat. However I also understand that it is likely that the company may decide to work with an illustrator that they already know. Obviously I will be very disappointed if this is the case, but I am still very fond of my new character, and hope that his smiley face and his innocent charm may appeal and tempt a publisher one day!
